1827
Maker: Blunt
Antique blueback nautical chart published by E. & G.W. Blunt showing the coast of North Carolina, c. 1827. This scarce early chart has a great representation of the Outer Banks of NC and Pamlico Sound, spelled Pamtico on this chart. This chart is oriented with north to the right, as indicated on the compass. It includes soundings (water depths) near the shore, some cities such as Beaufort and Washington, NC. Inset maps on the left side are: Cape Fear River from its Entrance to Smithvill; Beaufort Harbor; Cape Fear; Cape Lookout; Cape Hatteras; and The Bar and Roads of Occracock (Ocracoke). Lighthouses are shown pictorially. Two of the inset maps have a trompe l'oeil effect at the corner to look like a piece of paper that is curling. This chart does not include the Marsh Point Light Vessel that was built in 1828, and it is clearly older than some other examples. About 26 x 37 inches. Good antique condition with signs of age typical for a working chart that was used at sea. Its is whole and the edges are in good condition. It has some stains and waviness. Could be restored for an additional cost. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, which is why the shipping cost is higher than other items.
