1856
Maker: US Coast Survey.
Antique coast survey chart of the entrance to San Francisco, CA, by the US Coast Survey, 1856. This chart was created before the Golden Gate Bridge was started in 1933. It offers a good representation of San Francisco, but at this time Oakland, Berkeley, and the general eastern part of the Bay area were in the process of being surveyed. Oakland officially became a city in 1854, just before this survey was published. Includes an inset chart showing the water depths approaching the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This is a fascinating glimpse at a major California city area as it was developing. Very good restored condition-has been cleaned and rebacked. Some signs of age may still be visible, mostly along the fold lines, but overall the chart is whole and looks wonderful. Some waviness to the paper. Approx. 20.5 x 38.5 inches to the neatline.
