Genuine Antique Print

1879

Maker: Root & Tinker

Antique print showing a view of Manhattan. This was produced as an advertising pocket map for Rogers, Peet & Co., wholesale and retail clothiers whose location is indicated on the map. The map is signed J.W. Williams and copyrighted by Root & Tinker. It is interesting to see the city before there were any skyscrapers (the first was built in 1889) and the water is crowded with ships of all kinds. The Brooklyn Bridge was nearing completion at the time of this map's publication. Text on the back offers a Stranger's Guide to New York and describes notable places with an itinerary How to See New York in One Week. The publisher Root & Tinker was a prolific New York City publisher of trade journals, separately issued prints, broadsides and trade cards. They produced general interest subjects that could be imprinted with company names to be used as advertising promotions. Good overall antique condition, with mild toning and slight wear at paper edges. some separation along the folds at sides that has been repaired with tape. Measures approx. 9.25 x 7.5 inches picture area.
