Maker: Ballou's Pictorial
Antique print of a view of the Nahant Hotel in Nahant, MA, from Ballou's Pictorial, July 21, 1855. The text describes the hotel and its importance. The image shows the second Nahant Hotel (the first had burned down in 1850) as a huge building with sprawling grounds, covered porches, and various amusements for visitors of all ages. This hotel burned down in 1861 and was not rebuilt. A description from nahanthistory.org: "This is probably the largest hotel in America; the carpeted floors cover an area of nearly four acres; nine miles of wire are required to connect the balls with the annunciator; and the whole of this immense establishment is lighted with gas manufactured on the premises. Upon the first floor are the drawing rooms, reception parlors, offices, reading room, dining hall, and private dining parlors." Ballou's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion was a Boston publication and the image at the top is the city of Boston. Image measures approx. 7.5 x 9.5 and the total page size is approx. 15 x 11 inches. Very good antique condition with mild toning that is slightly darker at edges and a few small spots. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the engraved print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned. This print could be hand-colored by our professional colorist for an additional $50.
