Genuine Antique Map

1588

Maker: Braun & Hogenburgh

Antique map of Leuven in Belgium by Braun & Hogenberg, published in Civitates Orbis Terrarum, c. 1588. The title translates to "Louvain, the capital of the cities of Brabant, the only seat of the Muses and the most famous of the arts, and the most desired residence." Leuven was founded in the 9th century around a fortress built by a German emperor against the Normans, and it became important in the 11th century as the residence of the counts of Leuven, afterward (1190) the dukes of Brabant. In 1425 the Catholic University of Leuven was founded. The first university in the Netherlands, it became renowned for its Roman Catholic teaching. This map shows the impressive defences of the city, including the wall and moat. Canals and roads run through the city. Figures in the lower right display the local style of dressing. Very good antique condition with some minor wrinkles, some waviness to the antique paper and some minor spots in the margin. Upper right corner has been slightly repaired. Color is more recent. Measures approx. 13.75 x 19.25 to the neatline.
