Antique Map of The United States of America by Colton, 1855. Large territories in the West- Oregon, Washington, New Mexico (no Arizona), Utah, Nebraska, Kanzas (this spelling of Kansas only appeared on a few maps), and Minnesota. Shows routes to the West Coast, progress of the railroads, routes of exploration, and more. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. Very good antique condition with mild toning, some small spots and some small wear/tears at the paper edges. Measures approx. 24 x 15.75 inches to the neatline.
