Maker: Jaillot

Antique map of the Berry area of France, from a composite atlas circa 1775. Berry is a historical province in central France, also known as "Le Berry" or "The Green Heart of France." It is characterized by its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and charming villages, making it a popular destination for tourists. The region is part of the Loire Valley and is known for its picturesque landscapes, including the Brenne region with its numerous ponds. Berry became divided in 1790 between the départements of Cher (Upper Berry) and Indre (Lower Berry). A composite atlas is an atlas made up of a selection of previously issued maps. This atlas appears to have been partly by Louis Charles Desnos and an atlas title page dated 1769 by Desnos was present. The full title translates to "THE PROVINCE OF BERRY. THE GENERALITY OF BOURGES, where the elections of BOURGES, YSSOUDUN, CHAU-ROUX, DUBLANC, DELA CHASTRE, DESAMAND, AND DELA CHARITE are held. DEDICATED TO MESSIRE NICOLAS ESTIENNE ROUJAULT, Knight, Councilor to the King in his Councils, Master of Requests, Ordinary of the House, Intendant of Justice, Police, and Finance in the Generality of Bourges, Parson, very humble and very obedient servant, HUBERT JAILLOT, Ordinary Geographer to the King." Dated 1707. This map has original hand-coloring and shows cities, towns, villages, rivers, topographic detail, etc. Includes Bourges, Nevers, Gien, and more. Good antique condition with some minor stains, and some small tears at the paper edges. Measures approx. 18.25 x 26.25 inches to the neatline.
