Genuine Antique Vellum Page
possibly 1508
Maker: Thielman Kerver
Beautifully illuminated page from a late Middle Ages/early Renaissance Book of Hours, in Latin and French. A previous owner wrote 1508 in pencil, which may refer to the year it was produced, although an expert has attributed it to Thielman Kerver and dated it to 1500. Books of Hours first appeared in the 13th century and gained immense popularity during the 14th and 15th centuries, particularly in northern Europe, according to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. These devotional books were used for private prayer. This leaf is from the brief transitional period when the new technology of printing with movable type was combined with the more labor intensive methods of hand painting. One side of the page is in Latin with prayers, and the other side is in French, which is a table of contents and says it was made in Paris. On vellum, with gilded illustrations on the side that feature blue flowers and strawberries. Very good antique condition with some mild soil consistent with age. Measures approx. 8 x 4.75 inches to the page edges.
