Genuine Antique Hand Colored Map

1789

Maker: Beugo / Gordon

Antique hand colored map of the world from Gordon's New Geographical Grammer and Complete Gazetteer, 1789. Engraved by John Beugo (I. Beugo, Scult.). John Beugo (1759-1841) was best known for his portraits of noteworthy English politicians, physicians, artists and Robert Burns; however, he was considered the leading Scottish engraver of the day. This interesting map is all but undocumented among map dalers and collectors. We believe Beugo may have copied the basic map from Thomas Kitchin's 1780 map, which is similar in many ways but does not have the updated information on Captain Cook's voyages including the Alaska coast. This map is also similar to Matthew Carey's 1795 map, although Carey's map has more precise details on Cook's routes. Other interesting features of this map include the decorative cartouche with a putti beneath it, the states on the east coast of the US stretch to the Mississippi River, Louisiana is shown but not yet purchased by the US, Quivira (one of the imagined cities of gold) appears on the west of North America, the Rocky Mountains are not yet known, a large Tibet, Tasmania is still included as part of Australia, and many more interesting details for you to explore and discover. Folds as issued. Measures approx. 11.25 x 20.25 inches to the platemark. Currently framed with old mat that is probably not archival- can be sold unframed at the same price or re-matted with an archival mat and backing for an additional $25. For framed items, in store pick up is best, but this can be shipped at an additional cost- please contact us for shipping rates if you would like to have it shipped framed.
