Genuine Antique Print

1889

Maker: Ashton / Miller

Antique print of Hyde Park in Sydney, Australia. From the Picturesque Atlas of Australasia (second edition) published in Sydney in 1889, this image was engraved by H Miller Co. after a drawing by prominent local Sydney artist J.R. Ashton. Hyde Park is the oldest park in Australia and also one of its most well-known. It was originally "reserved as a racecourse for the amusement of the citizens of the early days... When the noble sport was moved farther afield the ground was retained as a pleasure reserve." The scene shows the large park with intersecting paths and surrounding trees being enjoyed by many citizens. In the background, the cityscape can be seen, and in the foreground a rush of horse-drawn carriages of various sorts adds a dynamic sense of movement and bustle, which contrasts with the serene park. Wonderful hand-coloring. Very good condition with some toning. Matted. Measures approx. 7 x 11 inches to the neatline and 13.25 x 17.5 inches to the outer edges of the mat. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned.
