Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1851

Maker: Levasseur.

Antique map from the Atlas National Illustre des 86 Departments et des Possessions de la France, Divise par Arrondissements, Cantons et Communea, by Levasseur, 1851. This map shows interesting boundaries, including Texas as a Republic (in it's "strawberry" shape), a suggested Northwest Passage, Mexico before the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and the US claims in the Northwest (reflected in the slogan "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight"). It is unclear why outdated political boundaries continued to be used in Levasseur's atlases (perhaps because these particular changes didn't concern the French). Surrounded by exquisitely detailed engraved illustrations and vignettes, as well as statistical and general information. Original hand-coloring. Very good condition, approx. 12 x 17.25 inches.
