Antique uncolored map, the title of which translates to "General Map of the Discoveries of Admiral de Fonte representing the great probability of a Passage to the North West by Thomas Jefferys ... 1768." This is from Diderot's Encyclopedia, c. 1773. Diderot's maps were one of the first surveys of comparative cartography, tackling a number of the early misconceptions of the west coast of North America and the Northeastern Asian Coastline. Includes Quivira, New Albion, and land masses where Alaska is based on information from people in Kamschatka. Good restored condition with some image transfer. Has been archivally cleaned and backed. Measures approx. 11.5 x 15 inches to the neatline.
