Genuine Antique Map

1780

Maker: Raynal and Bonne.

Antique black and white map from the "Atlas de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre, Dresse Pour l'Histoire Philosophique et Politique des Etablissemens et du Commerce des Europeens dans les deux Indes (Atlas of All Known Parts of Globe, Lists For Philosophical History and Policy establishments and Trade of the Europeans in the two Indies)." by Raynal and Bonne, 1780. The title translates to "Western part of Canada, containing the five great lakes of Canada, etc." This map shows an early depiction of the Great Lakes. This atlas was published during the American Revolutionary War. It is notable that a chain of rivers and lakes extends to both the east and west on this map: at the time there was a hope that a Northwest Passage would be discovered that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and cartographers occasionally took artistic license to suggest that could be true. Includes Fort Toronto, Fort Detroit, Fort St Louis, and Fort Chicago among others as well as Native American Indian areas. Very good condition, with a subtle water stain at the right paper edge, some other mild signs of age. Measures approx. 8 x 12.25 inches to the neatline.

Genuine Antique Map from 1780.
