1778
Maker: London Magazine.
Antique uncolored print showing a view of Hell Gate, a narrow tidal strait in the East River in New York City (it separates Astoria, Queens from Randall's and Wards Islands). This image was made by W.A. Williams in 1775 and published in London Magazine in April 1778. This print has a numbered key corresponding to points in the print showing the locations of dangerous rocks, outcroppings, and shallows. In October 1776, Admiral Howe sailed some of the British fleet through the strait, an action which was considered reckless at the time. In the 1800s the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began to clear obstacles from the strait with explosives. This print captures the dangerous waters as they were then Admiral Howe sailed through and long before the blasting began. Very good antique condition with some very minor spots. Approx. 4.5 x 7.75 inches to the paper edges. **SOLD**
