Genuine Antique Map

1637

Maker: Tavernier.

Antique map of part of Europe by Tavernier, 1637. The map contains the area from Paris and London in the west to Lithuania and Serbia in the east, and Italy's Po Valley in the south up to Copenhagen in the north. Includes all major rivers and waterways and innumerable towns. Tavernier likely intended for the map to provide an overview of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), a conflict that was at its height when this map was published. It was originally in Jean Boisseau's rare atlas, Theatre des Gaules ou Descriptions Generales et Particulieres de toutes les Provinces du Royaume de France, avec les Provinces & Estats circonuoisins. It is quite rare and we can find no others on the market at this time. This map has been archivally restored- cleaned, deacidified, and backed with light-weight tissue. It retains some signs of age including staining in the upper corners and edge wear but should look good when framed. Verso is blank. Measures approx. 21.25 x 16 inches.
