Antique black and white map of the town and harbor of Mahón, Mahon, or Maó, the capital city of the island of Menorca, during the War of the Spanish Succession. From "The History of England, by Mr. Rapin de Thoyras. Continued from the Revolution [of 1688] to the Accession of King George II by N. Tindal" published in 1745. Engraved by I. Basire. The decorative cartouche holds the key to the numbers on the map. Menorca was an important naval location during the war. The British capture of Menorca in 1708 combined with possession of Gibraltar gave them control of the Western Mediterranean. More recently, in popular culture, Mahon is said to be the birthplace of mayonnaise! Good to very good condition with some small archivally repaired tears at the paper edges including a larger tear at top center that goes into the map. Folds as issued. Some slight image transfer or ghosting. Approx. 13.25 x 24.25 inches to the neatline. Page size is approx. 15.5 x 26
