Antique black and white broadside proclamation, "For a Day of Public Thanksgiving and Praise," issued by Massachusetts Governor Alexander H. Rice (1876-79), naming November 30 of 1876 as Thanksgiving Day in the Commonwealth, and elaborating on the nation's Centennial that same year, and of the history of Thanksgiving in Massachusetts. Emblazoned with a precursor to the Commonwealth's modern seal, featuring a Native American holding his bow and arrow at center, and a bent arm holding a sword overhead, with the motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" ("By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty."). Originally folded, very good condition, measures 27.5 x 19.5. **SOLD**
