Genuine Antique Civil War Battle Map

1867

Maker: Bien / US War Dept.

Antique Civil War battle map published by the US War Department. Shown on this map is the area in Virginia near Appomattox Court House. Very detailed and includes homesteads, mills, farms, and churches, and towns. The Battle of Appomattox Court House, fought in Appomattox County, Virginia, on the morning of April 9, 1865, was one of the last battles of the American Civil War. It was the final engagement of Confederate General in Chief, Robert E. Lee, and his Army of Northern Virginia before it surrendered to the Union Army of the Potomac under the Commanding General of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant. This map is dated 1867 and surveyed and drawn by J.E. Weyss, with Julius Bien, lithographer. Very good restored condition. This map has been archivally cleaned, deacidified, and rebacked. Some signs of age still visible including minor stains and some edge damage. Image is slightly faded. The printing of the map is generally very clear and crisp, but some of the text outside of the map is not as crisp, such as the writing outside the neatline on the bottom and the compass. Measures approx. 30 x 22 inches to the neatline.
