Genuine Antique Map

1715

Maker: Moll

A gorgeous example of Hermann Moll's North America "Codfish" map published in 1715. Beautiful, ornate, with an illustrated cartouche, codfish vignette, and small insets of St. John's Harbour, Boston Harbour, Staten Island, Havana, Cartegena Harbour and Forts, etc. This map is a favorite of collectors as it is one of the earliest large-format maps of North America printed in England. Some of the cartography was based on outdated information, thus resulting in a slightly squished New England and oddly-shaped Canadian Maritimes. This map also includes Caifornia as an island and the Straits of Annian, which was merely a rumor and related to the search for the Northwest Passage. It also shows the routes of various explorers, many of whom were searching for that very passage in Hudson Bay. Very good overall restored condition, this map has been backed which has repaired some cracks and tears. It was published as two joined sheets. Measures approx. 22.75 x 37.75 inches to the neatline.
