Antique map of Spitzbergen published by A. Constable & Co., 1820. Probably from Scoresby's 1820 Account of the Arctic Regions. Spitsbergen is the largest and the only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. The Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz gave Spitsbergen its name when he discovered it in 1596. The name Spitsbergen, meaning "pointed mountains" (from the Dutch spits - pointed, bergen - mountains), at first applied both to the main island and to the associated archipelago as a whole. Measures approx. 8.5 x 7.5 inches to the neatline. Good antique condition with toning and some small stains. There is an additional horizontal fold that we are flattening
