Genuine Antique Map

Maker: Laurent Fries / Waldseemuller / Ptolemy

Early map of Southeast Asia, by Laurent Fries, based on a map by Waldseemuller, published c. 1535. This map shows geography that is different from our modern understanding of the world- the Ganges River is on the left side and China is on the right side of the map. The map reflects the ancient Ptolemaic belief that the Indian Ocean was landlocked, and the area on the right side of the image (labeled Sinae, or China) was assumed to be connected to a large southern continent. Handsome hand-coloring and a distinctive trapezoidal shape that was used on early maps. Very good antique condition with a mild stain along the fold. Measures approx. 11 x 16 inches to the printed edges.
