Genuine Antique Map, Framed

1760

Maker: Gibson / Gentleman's Magazine

Antique map of the North Pole, engraved by John Gibson, and published in Gentleman's Magazine in 1760. Based on the work of Jean Palairet, this map shows the Northern Hemisphere and the Icy Great North Sea surrounding the North Pole. There is a West Sea and hypothetical rivers that suggest a Northwest Passage by water across North America, along with other myths in the Northwest part of North America. A note near center indicates the rumor that a Dutch ship reached 80 degrees north latitude in 1670. A dashed line suggests an easy sail between Portugal and Japan through the Icy or Great North Sea. The land masses are highly distorted , including a huge single island where the Aleutians are today, with the note they were discovered in 1753. Good to very good antique condition with mild water stains. Framed with museum glass. Measures approx. 8.25 x 8.25 to paper edge and 12.25 x 13.5 inches to frame edge.
