Hand Colored Genuine Antique Map

C. 1612-1616

Maker: John Speed.

Antique map of Connaught, Ireland by John Speed, c.1612-1616. This map shows towns and cities, topographical information, forests, bodies of water, and county boundaries delineated by color. Inset map shows the city of Galway. Features the wavy water and Spencerian script that are distinguishing features of Speed's maps. This map is from one of the earlier editions of Speed's renowned "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain" probably C.1612-1616. Later versions include amendments and alterations to publishers' imprints. Speed's county maps were, and remain, amongst the most popular and sought-after because of the decorative and informative content. Most have town plans, in many cases the first of those locations and surveyed by Speed himself. For this atlas, Speed had prepared the maps for engraving before 1610, and they appeared in the first atlas two years later. Also includes a strapwork title cartouche with a royal crest, a cartouche with compass and putti, and a scale cartouche with putti. On verso is an English text history of the province and a "Table of all the Towns, Rivers, and memorable Places mentioned in the Province of Connaught." This map is in good to very good overall antique condition with toned and slightly wavy paper. Some very mild staining. Color may be later. Center fold as issued. Highly collectible early edition Speed map. Measures approximately 15" x 20" (H x W) to the outer edge of the decorative border. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, an additional charge will appear on your card after your original purchase.
