Genuine Antique Map

1773

Maker: Bellin / E. van Harrevelt, D.J. Changuion

Antique hand-colored map of the area near Cayenne, French Guiana, originally by Bellin, this edition was published in the Atlas portatif pour servir a l'intelligence de l'Histoire philosophique et politique des etablissemens et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes (Portable atlas to help understand the philosophical and political history of European settlements and trade in the two Indias.) by E. van Harrevelt, D.J. Changuion, 1773. Shows cities, including Matouri (Matoury), Monsineri (Montsinery-Tonnegrande), and others. Also shows native towns. Ignored by Spanish explorers, who found the region too hot and poor to be claimed, the region was not colonized until 1604, when a French settlement was founded. However, it was soon destroyed by the Portuguese, who were determined to enforce the provisions of the Treaty of Tordesillas. French colonists returned in 1643 and founded Cayenne, but they were forced to leave once more following attacks by Indigenous peoples. In 1664, France finally succeeded at establishing a permanent settlement at Cayenne. Over the next decade the colony changed hands between the French, Dutch, and English, before being restored to France. This map is in both French and Dutch. Very good condition with toning at edges. Has center fold as issued. Visible plate mark. Approx. 8.5 x 11.25 inches to the neatline.
