Genuine Antique Map

1902

Maker: Bromley.

Antique map of part of Boston, MA, from the Atlas of the City of Boston, Boston Proper and Back Bay, published by G. W. Bromley and Co., 1902. Includes the area near Fenway Park, although it would be ten more years before the park was built and started hosting Red Sox games, and generally the areas between the Back Bay Fens and Brookline Ave, and between Lansdowne St and Queensberry St. These maps were created for tax and insurance purposes and the buildings are coloured by type- the color key was only included on the index, but yellow is wood, pink is brick, grey is stone, and blue is iron. Each property is labeled with the property owner's name. Large numbers designate wards. North is oriented to the top. Shows roads, railroads, public spaces, etc. This area was actively changing at this time and someone was noting the changes on the map in pencil (these could easily be erased if preferred). Good condition with small water stains at bottom corners, mild surface soil/stains, slight wrinkling of the page, edge wear, and overall toning that is darker at the paper edges. Each page of the atlas has a leather tab and the tabs have stained the opposite page. Pages are backed with linen. Should look good when framed- some signs of age will still be visible. Measures approx. 22 x 32 inches to the paper edges.
