Genuine Antique Map

1875

Maker: Walling / Tackabury.

Antique uncoloured map of part of Canada, published in Tackabury's Atlas of the Dominion of Canada, drawn, compiled, and edited by H.F. Walling and published by George N. Tackabury, 1875. This map does not show the railway as it was, but rather the proposed routes for the future railway. The new Liberal prime minister, Alexander Mackenzie, ordered construction of segments of the railway as a public enterprise under the supervision of the Department of Public Works led by Sandford Fleming (who is noted as the Engineer in Chief on this map). Surveying was carried out during the first years of a number of alternative routes in this virgin territory followed by construction of a telegraph along the lines that had been agreed upon. The Thunder Bay section linking Lake Superior to Winnipeg was commenced in 1875. Good to very good antique condition with overall toning, some mild staining particularly at the edges and center fold. Measures approx. 11 x 24.5 inches to the neatline.
