Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1852

Maker: Mitchell/ Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co.

Antique map from Mitchell's Intermediate Geography, by Augustus Mitchell and published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. This map was made and copyrighted in 1839 and it was used in Mitchell's atlases for quite a few years- this example came from an atlas published in 1852. A fascinating glimpse into a moment of the development of the United States. This map shows the country around the time of the Mexican-American War when Mexico had California, Arizona, and New Mexico. This map has Texas as a Republic with an extension running north along the Arkansas River and Rio Grande to the Rocky Mountains. Includes a large Oregon Territory, Iowa Territory, Missouri Territory, huge Indian Territory, and large Wisconsin Territory. The northern boundary of Maine shows the US claim in the Aroostook War as a dashed line, but the boundary had been decided by the time this map was published, which is why the new boundary is also shown. Cities are noted, and includes some topography and identifies the Native Americans in some areas. Fold as issued. Fair antique condition with stains in the map and in the margin. Seam separation at bottom has been repaired with archival tape. Map measures approx. 10.5 x 16.5 inches to the neatline. Total page size is 12 x 18 inches.
