Genuine Antique Map
1757
Maker: Bellin.
Antique uncolored map of the southern and central United States, written in French. The area shown on the map extends from the Carolinas to Santa Fe and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. With Fort Chicago, Fort Detroit, New Orleans, and more. France gave up Canada and all of its claims to territory east of the Mississippi River to Britain in 1763. Includes a decorative cartouche. Map notes the locations of various Native American tribe settlements, topographical details, etc. This map is similar to SOU066 (in fact it is nearly identical) but it is impossible to guess why two nearly identical maps were produced with the only difference being the inclusion of Florida in the title. Perhaps it is related to the public's interest in Florida at the time (this was just before Spain gave Florida to England, at which time it was split into East and West Florida). Visible plate mark. Very good overall restored condition with some very mild toning throughout, as well as a slight waviness to the antique paper. This map was backed on a light-weight paper for stability. This also repaired some small tears and filled a tight margin on left side. Measures approximately 8.75" x 12" (H x W) to the neatline.
