Antique map of the United States as it was in 1879, with inset of a "Sketch exhibiting the Westward Movement of the Centre of the Population". Original hand-coloring by state with vibrant country boundaries. Also includes cities, railroads, some topography, and graphic depicting the composition of the Gulf Stream. Inset of Alaska, which the US acquired from Russia just 12 years earlier. Very good overall antique condition, with some minor signs of age. Measures approx. 16 x 20 inches to the neatline.
