Genuine Antique Map
1845
Maker: Lt. William Buell Franklin
Antique map of part of the United States between the Missouri River and the Green River, with the Black Hills and Pike's Peak. This is an early and historical map of the region, and part of this map is based on Fremont's map of 1843. It covers the area between the Arkansas and Platte Rivers, and extends westward to South Pass and the Green River. The dragoons departed Ft. Leavenworth and marched to South Pass via the Oregon Trail and returned 99 days later via the Arkansas River route, a distance of 2,200 miles over the tough western terrain. The route is shown on the map with the dates of their journey, from May 18th to August 24th. Engraved by the firm of Smith & McClelland. The path goes through Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado. This map is in fair to good condition and has been professionally restored. A previous owner wrote on the back of the map in pen and it has bled through at the top. The ink also ate through the paper leaving some small holes that have been closed. Measures approx. 8 x 13 inches to the neatline.
