Genuine Antique Map
1798
Maker: Stockdale
Antique map of part of the US shortly after the Revolutionary War, published by Stockdale, 1798. This map shows the eastern half of the country from Maine to South Carolina, with an inset that covers the area from North Carolina to East Florida. What is now Ohio is labeled Western Territory. It appears that Lake Michigan had not yet been found or mapped, as it is left off the map. This map was published to accompany the book "Travels Through the States of North America, and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, During the Years 1795, 1796, and 1797." by Isaac Weld Jr. Weld, an Irishman, traveled through eastern North America and Canada, and the tale of his travels was one of the most popular narratives of the day. The route he took is marked on the map. This map is also notable for locating many Native American Indian groups, including those marked by a dot, who were "Christian Indians" according to the note in the upper left. Very good restored condition; this map has been cleaned and backed, separations have been archivally repaired. It retains some signs of age, including some minor stains from tape that had been affixed to the map (now removed). Slight waviness to the antique paper and slight fading of print. Tight margins, with some added margin on the right side. Measures approx. 16 x 18.5 inches to the neatline.
