Territories in the Valley of the Mississippi. From The World as it Is, and as it Has Been: Or, a Comprehensive Geography and History, Ancient and Modern, by Samuel Griswold Goodrich, 1855, published by Colton, an unusual mid-19th century map of Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma marked as Indian Territory, a massive region in the center of the United States before most of the western states existed, with all the Indian tribes and their locations, the Rocky Mountains, the Great American Desert, and the great rivers that sustained the nation's mid-section at the same time that westward expansion marked the beginning of the end to the Native Americans' way of life. Includes key to areas of the various territories in square miles, and Indian populations of same in 1850, as well as the portions thereof that were considered civilized. Verso features a history of the State of Iowa, with engraving of Black Hawk, leader of the Sawk Tribe, and the extraordinary speech he made upon his capture. Very good condition with overall toning, measures approx. 8 x 9.75 inches.
