Genuine Antique Hand Colored Map

1836

Maker: Huntington.

Antique hand colored map of the world in two hemispheres with a chart of the comparative lengths of rivers at bottom. This map does not have the publishing information printed on it, but it is believed to have been published in 1836, by Huntington. This fascinating chart divides the planet by climate and lists the animals, plants, land types ("Green Pastures" and "Earthquakes"), and more of various areas. Africa is the only continent where humans are noted. Additional explanations are written sideways in the map. The small table at center shows the circumference of the globe on various parallels and the widths of several zones. At bottom is a chart showing the lengths of rivers in each hemisphere. At this time the Mississippi River was believed to be the longest river because the source of the Nile had not yet been found. Good antique condition with some minor staining and edge wear mostly at the corners. Sheet measures approx. 9.5 x 11.75 inches.
