Genuine Antique Uncolored Map
1682
Maker: Stoopendaal
Antique uncolored map of the World, by Daniel Stoopendaal, from a Staten Bible dated 1682. From the Dutch so-called ' Staten' bibles, published between 1637 and c. 1760, which contained 5 maps: The World, ' Paradise', The Perigrinations, The Promised Land Canaan, The Travels of St. Paul, and a plan of Jerusalem. The map is surrounded by allegorical representations of the continents based on Visscher. This early world map shows California as an island, and much is still unknown in the Pacific. Parts of Australia, New Zeeland, and Tasmania are included, although New Guinea is shown connected to New Holland (Australia). Almost nothing was known of the northern Pacific near Alaska and Kamchatka. Diagrams of the Copernican and Ptolemaic solar systems at top and bottom. Very good restored condition. Map has been archivally cleaned, deacidified, and repaired. Approx. 12 x 17.5 inches to the neatline.
