c.1780
Maker: Kitchin
Hand-colored antique map of South America, by T. Kitchin, c. 1780. Includes the Galapagos Islands as well as "Land seen by Davis 1686" (Easter Island or Rapa Nui) and "Terra Australis" in the southern Atlantic near Gough Island (Antarctica is thousands of miles away, so this appearance can likely be attributed to the concept of Terra Australis Incognita, a hypothetical continent which “should” exist in the southern hemisphere to balance the amount of land in the northern hemisphere, that was always on the mind of most of these European travelers and their financiers). Good condition with toning and some image transfer from text on neighboring pages. Some wrinkles and edge wear. Measures approx. 7 x 8.75 inches to the neatline.
