Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Engraved Map

1841 circa

Maker: Tanner.

Antique map from the "Universal Atlas" of master cartographer Henry Schenck Tanner, hand-colored engraved antique map of Mississippi in circa 1841, with steam boat routes and distances between river stops along the length of the river. Some early railroads are shown, including one between Vicksburg and Jackson that doesn't connect anywhere else and a proposed railroad from New Orleans north through Monticello and Columbus. The map says it was "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1836" but this map includes the county of Harrison, which was created in 1841. It does not include Sunflower County, which was created in 1844. Bolivar and Washington counties have early shapes. Very good overall antique condition, with toning that is darker at the paper edges, some minor small edge tears, a few minor spots. Measures approx. 13.5 x 11 inches to the neatline.
