Antique hand-colored map, from S. Augustus Mitchell's "A New Universal Atlas, Containing Maps of the Various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World, With a Special Map of Each of the United States, Plans of Cities, etc.", 1849. With inset maps of Liberia and Monrovia. This map was published before Lake Victoria had been "found" by Europeans and it includes a long mountain range labeled the Mountains of the moon. Very good overall antique condition, with toning that is darker at the paper edges and some minor spots. Measures approx. 12.25 x 15 inches to the neatline.
