Antique bird's-eye view of Manhattan with Brooklyn and other areas around New York City, by Charles Magnus, circa 1856. This handsome view shows the city as it was in the mid-19th Century, when the church towers were the tallest structures- long before sky scrapers. Ships of all sorts fill the waters, with many more ships docked along the wharves, and the only bridges are in Upper Manhattan. A delicate border surrounds the image. Original hand-coloring. This was likely letterhead. Good condition with mild toning. Tight margins to the decorative border. Measures approx. 6.25 x 8.75 inches to the paper edges. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the print- these are not in the print.
