Genuine Antique Map
1860
Maker: Valentine
Antique pictorial map of New York from New York City to Lake Ontario, published in D.T. Valentine's Manual, (The Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York), 1860, Lith by Geo. Hayward. This map shows the Mohawk River, the Hudson River, Lake George, Lake Champlain, many cities including Albany, Saratoga, and Schenectady. This map is based on the image carved on an early Powder Horn, possibly from the French & Indian War era, around 1760 judging by the forts named on the map. This image is a good example of the type of carving that was done on powder horns in 18th century North America. A powder horn was sold at auction in 2023 with very similar artwork carved on it. Fair to good condition, with a tight margin on left side, some tears at the paper edges including a large tear in the lower right (repaired). Folds as issued. Measures approx. 12.5 x 10 inches to the neatline.
