Antique hand-colored map of Japan by Johnson & Browning, from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World published in 1862. Shows the many prefectures of Japan, with inset maps of Yesso and the Japanese Kuriles (Hokkaido), and the Bay of Nagasaki. Compiled from the maps of Siebold with additions from the surveys and reconnaissance of the US Japan Ex. With an explanation of Japanese terms used on the map. This map was published just 9 years after Japan opened its doors to trading with the West. Very good condition with mild toning, a minor spot or two. Approx. 12.5 x 15.5 inches to the outer border edge.
