Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map
1863
Maker: Johnson & Ward.
Antique hand-colored map of the U.S. capital city in the middle of the Civil War, from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, showing L'Enfant's famous grid pattern with major thoroughfares radiating from the White House, then called the President's House; the Capitol; and squares and circles of open space throughout the city. Includes engraved vignettes of the Capitol, Smithsonian, and an early engraving of the future Washington Monument with a fanciful temple-like octagonal base that does not exist today. On this map, the A&W Railroad terminates at Long Bridge, where goods were offloaded, transported over the bridge in omnibuses and reloaded on the other side. Decorative border, good antique condition with overall toning that is darker at the paper edges, and some spots/foxing, minor wear and tears at the paper edges. Should frame beautifully. Approx. 12.25 x 15 inches to the outer edges of the decorative border.
