Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1863

Maker: Johnson and Ward.

Antique hand-colored map of Civil War era New York City and Brooklyn, from Johnson and Ward's 1863 atlas, with wonderful details of streets, parks, and landmarks such as Castle Garden in the Battery, the "cricket ground" of Central Park which was only six years old at the time; the Brooklyn Navy Yard; and the western edge, largely undeveloped, of what would one day become Queens; includes inset of Harlem and northern Manhattan. Interesting features: Blackwell's Island which housed a hospital, penitentiary, separate alms houses for male and females, a work house, and a lunatic asylum; and the Crystal Palace on the site of the modern Central Public Library, despite the fact that the Crystal Palace had burned to the ground 6 years before this map was printed. Good  to very good condition with some minor foxing/spotting and toning. Map measures 16 x 26 inches to the outer edges of the decorative border.
