Antique hand-colored map by Colton, 1871, with states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island showing townships, cities, towns, rivers, lakes, land forms, and railroads. Colored by town with darker border lines to indicate counties and state borders. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. With the iconic Colton decorative border. Good antique condition, paper is lightly toned overall with stains on the bottom sides. Tight margin. Measures approx. 17.5 x 26 inches.
