Genuine Antique Print
1887
Maker: Harper's Weekly
Antique print showing scenes from "Monument Day" in New Haven Connecticut, 1887, published in Harper's Weekly. The scenes shown are Display of Fireworks, The Monument, and The Procession ascending East Rock. The memorial was dedicated to Union soldiers and sailors. The Monument, in East Rock Park, New Haven, is significant historically because it is a tangible symbol of the honor and respect tendered to its soldiers of several wars by the City of New Haven. The long process of organizing to erect the monument took many years. Dedication Day was a tremendous event, setting a crowd record for the state that may still stand of perhaps 20,000 people marching in the parade before spectators estimated to number 100,000 to 175,000. Very good overall antique condition with mild toning of the paper and some mild wrinkling in the antique paper. Measures approximately 13.5" x 9" to the neatline. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned.
