Genuine Antique Engraved Map

1796

Maker: Denison.

Genuine antique map of Massachusetts by J. Denison, published by Thomas & Andrews in Morse's Geography, 1796. Copper plate engraved map. Interesting early map of Massachusetts soon after the Revolution showing early counties, towns, cities. With an inset of Berkshire County. This map shows Monomoy attached to the mainland at Chatham and Provincetown cut off from Truro, also Nauset broken into islands and Great Island in Wellfleet separated as an island. Unusual Martha's Vineyard shape. Dotted lines are both county borders and also roads. A note under the scale of distance states "The surveys of the Eastern Counties could not be obtained seasonably to complete this Map." This is why the western counties are populated with towns while the eastern counties appear empty in comparison. Also shows a proposed canal near the Cape Cod Canal. Good to very good condition. Restored and backed but retains some minor stains and some damage at top along a fold where tape was likely removed. Measures approx. 7.5x9.75 inches too the neatline.
