Genuine Antique Hand Colored Map

1806

Maker: Cary.

Antique hand colored map of France by Cary, 1806. Published in Cary's New Universal Atlas. Colored by province with bolder colors indicating boundaries. Shows towns, cities, roads, bodies of water, topographic information, and more. This map was published at the time of Napoleon, when he was winning every battle and gaining much control over Europe. Obviously France needed to be included in this British atlas, but the British were very displeased with what had been happening in France since the Revolution. We think perhaps this map is a British snub of France and Napoleon - showing France as it was before the Revolution rather than as it was in 1806. Or perhaps the map of the France of 1806 was also included in the atlas, and this map was there to show the contrast. Very good condition, with very minor surface soiling and very minor image transfer. Approx. 18 x 20.25 inches to the neatline.
