Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map
1850
Maker: Mitchell / Cowperthwait
Antique map of the United States at the middle of the 19th century, with original hand-coloring. On this rare map, most of the west is divided into large territorial groupings consisting of the Oregon Territory, Missouri or North West Territory, Minnesota Territory, Utah Territory, and Territory of New Mexico, as well as a larger Indian Territory (noting the names of some tribes) encompassing parts of present-day Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado in addition to Oklahoma. This map was produced in 1850, and Indian Territory would be reduced to the approximate boundaries of present-day Oklahoma shortly after by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, forcing Native peoples into an even smaller portion of land. Notes the Santa Fe Trail, showing the wagon train route to California, and includes inset maps of the Gold Region of California, and the District of Columbia (which notes points of interest.) Also includes a key showing state capitals, principal cities and towns, railroads, common roads, battle fields, and the heights of mountains in feet. Very good antique condition, with overall toning of the paper, tight margins at the top and sides, and some tears and wear along the bottom edge of the paper which can be hidden with a mat when framing. A previous owner (or their child) colored part of the title in ink but it is hardly noticeable. Measures approx. 15.75" x 26.25" to the neatline.
