High-quality Reproduction
Maker: Reproduction.
High-quality hand-printed and hand colored reproduction of an antique view of Boston by William Burgis, from 1743. This monumental view depicts Boston as seen from Castle Island, today part of the South Boston waterfront. In the text at bottom, Burgis emphasizes the town's "capacious" harbor, "pleasant" climate, fine civic architecture, and the importance of its economy to the British Empire. The view first appeared in 1725, but this is the 1743 revision. The changes include the addition of "Cambridge Town & Colleges" at upper right, though Harvard faces the wrong way. The view was originally engraved in London, but the revisions were likely made by a local engraver. An original of this map was on view in an exhibition at the Boston Public Library, but very few examples are known to be in existence. This reproduction was made using a combination of modern technology and traditional methods, wherein an original is scanned, its likeness is digitally etched onto an engraving plate, then the plate is used to print the image in the traditional way, with a printing press. It is then hand colored and mounted onto a linen cloth. This view consists of three sheets mounted on cloth with approx. 1/4 inch of cloth visible between each sheet. Excess cloth on edges can be trimmed or folded in when framed. Approx. 24.25 x 52 inches, not including the excess linen on edges. Has some imperfections that give the map a more authentic look. For other reproductions made in this method, please see the left side bar category "Digitally Engraved Specialty Reproductions". **SOLD**
A few ideas for hanging/framing a reproduction map on cloth:
1) You can fold the cloth at the top back and sew it, making a tube for a dowel to go through, and hang it like a wall map.
2) Magnetic poster frame hangers can be purchased from Amazon in a variety of sizes.
3) Gromets could be put into the cloth and the map hung on hooks.
4) Professional framing. This will protect the map best in the long run, especially if using acid-free materials and UV protective glass.
5) Pushpins.
