Antique engraving of a Bird's Eye View ("Balloon View") of Washington, DC, from Harper's Weekly, July 12, 1862. Harper's reprinted many of their illustrations in the 1890s in their series of volumes titled Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War. This image was included in the 1894 volume. With architectural details of the Capitol and other notable buildings. Sharp-eye viewers will notice that the dome of the Capitol was under construction at the time. The U.S. Capitol Dome was built between 1855 and 1866, serving as a symbol of American strength and resilience during the Civil War. Very good overall antique condition with toning that is darker at the paper edges. Measures approx. 9.25 x 14 inches to image edge.
Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire effect- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the engraved print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned.
