Antique book by Arthur H. Gardner, published 1915 (revised edition). First published in 1877, the author revised and updated the book to 1915. The book consists of descriptions of all of the shipwrecks, listed in order of year of the wreck, and many of the later wrecks include photographs of the wrecks. At the front of the book is a small fld-out map of Nantucket and the surrounding waters including the shoals that were so dangerous and caused many of the wrecks in the book. The map also indicates the locations of lighthouses, lightships, lifesaving stations, and humane society houses (Formally established in 1786, The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was concerned about the needless deaths resulting from shipwrecks and drownings and wanted to find ways to save lives, and one of their contributions were coastal huts where shipwreck victims could take refuge). Very good condition with minor signs of wear, a mild water stain at top of book. Map measures approx. 10.5 x 10.75 inches.
